Based in Karachi, Pakistan, Sustainable Initiatives was established in 2014 with a vision of working towards promoting practices of sustainable living mostly within an urban sustainability context. In a country like Pakistan, where poverty is a cause of extreme concern and many social and environmental evils, such groups from within the civil society can contribute significantly in bringing positive change.
Registered under the Societies Act XXI of 1860 and enjoying the Tax Exemption Certificate status from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Sustainable Initiatives is committed and equipped in promoting and implementing practices of sustainable living, such as in working towards having smart and green cities in Pakistan. Primarily started as a research and advocacy group, SI’s agenda includes a wide variety of issues such as implementation of social accountability tools, water and sanitation, and solid waste management.
Inculcating the spirit of volunteerism within the different communities as well as empowering people to take steps themselves once nudged in the right direction is a vision for SI. Short-term interventions can only do so much but for long-term sustainability, ideas and growth need to come from the community themselves. We also work towards skills development and entrepreneurship.
SI has a long-term focus; to sow the seeds today for which the fruits would be borne tomorrow. Therein, it networks with a wide variety of different organizations that are based both nationally and globally, including people from within the civil society, research and academia. Henceforth, we have a special vision to forge partnerships leading to collaborative engagement. For accessing funds, SI relies mainly on donations from different donor agencies along with the corporate sector and local philanthropists. SI employs both programmatic and project-based approaches in its work.
